How can I use interactive media in my class?

Interactive media can be utilized in the classroom first and foremost with the aid of microphones, Internet, and video.  Lectures can be recorded for students to view at a later date or for review, using both video and audio.  Lessons, assignments, quizzes, etc. can be put into the system to allow students to answer questions and respond in real time.  Group discussions can also be started, mediated, and/or monitored for the students to interact as a whole.

The CITTLE office staff is readily available to provide any assistance.  Any equipment needed to aid the use of interactive media in the classroom is available for use in the CITTLE office; and if something is not available, it can be acquired in a reasonable amount of time to be accessible to the instructor.

How do I organize a video project for my class?

A video project can be organized with the Microsoft PowerPoint and iDVD software programs.  Video is recorded directly into the iDVD program, both video and audio.  There it can be edited and have titles and subtitles inserted.  A video project for a class can also be organized and manipulated within PowerPoint through AuthorPoint software.  The instructor can record him or herself instructing live, edit, add titles and subtitles, add links, etc.  In either program, once it is finished, it can be transferred to the instructor’s website and/or put directly into his or her Blackboard course on-line.

All equipment can be set up in the CITTLE office for the instructor to use.  CITTLE staff is also available to help the instructor record, edit and add specific items to his or her class video project.  There will also be further assistance with putting the class video project into the instructor’s Blackboard course.

Assessment

How can I use technology to assign and grade problem sets?

Assignments can be posted into Blackboard for the students to access daily.  Students’ work can either be attached in an e-mail to be turned in to an instructor, or an assignment can be collaborated and posted at a link within an instructors Blackboard page for the students.  Upon the instructor’s will, the students’ answers, length of time taken for each question, etc. can be recorded and available for the instructor to view.  There the instructor can also grade the students’ work, record grades, and give them feedback.

Shells can be set up for instructors to put a course (or courses) on Blackboard.  The CITTLE staff will also assist the instructor with formatting a test or assignment within their Blackboard course for his or her students.

How can I address plagiarism in an online environment?

Plagiarism can be addressed in an online environment via online anti-plagiarism resources.  There are programs such as a “hit list” to keep an eye on or to use when investigating potential plagiarism, tips for finding plagiarized phrases, finding online paper or essay sales, and databases of already written papers that can be analyzed and matched.[1]

Communication

How do I distribute (paper) documents electronically?

Paper documents can be distributed electronically via e-mail as an attachment or the document can be posted on to the instructor’s Blackboard page directly or as a link, for the students to use at their leisure and/or to print out for themselves as a hard copy.

How do I film and distribute my lectures?

An instructor can film him or herself on his or her own or let CITTLE do it assist with the slightest detail or the entire process.  The CITTLE office has the resources to film lectures with various video and audio equipment.  CITTLE is also available to help edit the film to the instructor’s desire and post it (or a link) onto the instructor’s Blackboard account for a certain class or classes.

How do I protect copyrighted materials I put online?

Instructors are encouraged to download and print a reasonable number of copies of content for noncommercial personal or educational use only; provide that any permitted copies of content contain, in an unmodified form, and any copyright or other proprietary rights notices contained in the content.  Instructors are encouraged to site every piece of material they use on the site, or come to the CITTLE office to get readily available assistance.[2]

How can I use technology to provide a richer set of materials for my students?

You may use technology to provide a richer set of materials for the students by using e-mail.  E-mail can give students in a large class access to important information such as class schedules, assignments, and test.  You could also use the computer which allows the student access to the instructor without the restrictions of office hours.  This way the student can communicate with the instructor without the restrictions of office hours.  This way the student can communicate with the instructor privately and the instructor can as well.  The student in addition can communicate publicly with other classmates.  Students that are afraid to ask question in class can use the computers to ask their questions, argue points of interest, set appointments, and post general information to the class.

How do I make my lectures more engaging?

You can make your lectures more engaging by involving the students.  Instead of one way communication between you and the student, move toward mutual participation.  Start your lecture off with an interesting point or question (s).  Create a problem that may open up material to be taught for your lecture, this way the students will be force to think and use what they know.  Also, pause to invite questions from the students, allow them to interact with the class lecture.  This shows that you enjoy or appreciate receiving their questions by responding positively.  Every now and then use humor to reinforce students' understanding.  You can also use demonstrations, video clips, or PowerPoint to make class lectures more exciting, this way students can visualize what is being said and what they need to know.

How Do I Digitize Images?

To digitize images you will need the right equipment to get started: a digital camera and a scanner. With the digital camera take plenty of pictures of what you want to have digitized so that you will have lots of options to choose from. On the camera there are two settings, high and low resolution. High resolution is the main setting on the camera but it holds fewer amounts of images, but the choice is up to you. After capturing the images that you will be digitizing, you can bring your camera to CITTLE to be scanned or do them yourself. You will have to use a scanner, in order to get the images digitized. Make sure the images are how you want them, if not please adjust images as needed. Once everything is correct CITTLE will help you from here.

How do I create and distribute original videos?

To create and distribute original videos you have to follow these four steps: (1) Define goals (2) shoot video and gather material (3) edit (4) distribute and (5) evaluate. Make sure that you know exactly what it is that you want to create and distribute. If necessary create an outline of your goals to follow and make sure that you include an easier logic for lectures, allow your students to prepare for class, and allow students to refer to clips for online quizzes. Next gather and shoot your material. When shooting your video make sure to get permission for the people you are shooting, have the proper equipment, and an operator for the camera. When editing the videos make sure you preview the video to make sure that it is the materials that you want to use, then capture the video on the computer using your video editing software such as; iMovie, final cut, or adobe premiere, next you need to cut and collate clips from your video until you have a final version, and render your video.

How do I transfer videotape to a DVD for a class presentation?

To transfer videotape to a DVD for a class presentation you have to follow two steps: (1) capture and edit the original video (2) Create and record your project on DVD. If the original material is copyrighted it will not be possible to copy. When capturing and editing the original video you have to use a particular type of software. You have to copy the video on computer using video editing software such as iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. iMovie software is used for simple videos that have no titles or require no editing. Final Cut and Premiere is used for PowerPoint, images or animation in the video. Next you have to cut and collate the images until you have a complete version of the video. Lastly you will have to provide the edited version of your video. This will allow the computer program to write each frame of the new video to a new movie file, which can exported to other formats. Now to record your project to DVD you will have to use DVD software such as Apple’s iDVD. iDVD will create images of how the video will be arranged on the DVD and write them to a blank DVD-R CD. When you finish rendering your project insert a blank DVD-R CD in the DVD drive and follow the instructions on the menu.

How do I avoid violating copyright law and fair use standards on the web?

Certain strategies you can use to avoid violating copyright law and fair use standards on the web are by using blackboard. Blackboard can be access by students and faculty. Be sure that only students who are enrolled are the only one’s to be able to access blackboard. Do not allow public access. Make sure that all your materials are safely store and protected from the public and if you would like to share with the public then follow instructions to do so. Also make sure that you produce least amount of materials. Only make limit amounts of work available for students for example, if you only gave one section to be complete by the students then only provide them with that one section. Make sure that the work posted is not easily copied. Lastly, check the copyright on the work, make sure that you don’t need permission to use the information if not your own.
