Welcome to Tim's Web Page

Welcome to the home page of Tim Mulrooney.  I am currently the Data Research and Analytics lead at the Center for Community Safety at Winston-Salem State University. The goal of our office is to provide data analysis, geospatial training and products to Winston-Salem State University and the city of Winston-Salem.  GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems and serves as the technologies and methodologies by which data about spatially related phenomena can be created, stored, edited and rendered.  Many dissimilar fields and disciplines use GIS, ranging from business and marketing to the environmental sciences.

Most data can have a spatial component applied to it.  For example, we can use GIS to create a cancer rate map for the state of North Carolina.  From this map, we can see patterns in the state of North Carolina.  Researchers in the health sciences can use this information to explore why these patterns exists.  They can also look at outliers (very high values surrounded by lower values or very low values surrounded by high value counties) and research why these spatial outliers exist.

The Center for Community Safety is focused on addressing anthropologic quality of life issues in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.  At the Center for Community Safety we look to answer some of the following questions using GIS:

  • Where is crime the highest in the city of Winston-Salem?
  • What are the patterns of prison re-entry in Forsyth County?
  • Where are graduation rates the highest in the state of North Carolina?
  • How has the 2006 annexation of Winston-Salem affected urban crime patterns?
  • What schools in Winston-Salem have seen this highest incidence of violent acts?
  • How many drug crimes occur within 1,000 feet of Winston-Salem schools during the course of the school year?
  • How many car accidents have occurred within a particular neighborhood at night?
