There are a number of Web sites that offer advice on writing about literature. These are just a few of them:

?LitWeb: Writing about Literature

This is a good place to enter LitWeb, a site designed to support the Norton Introduction to Literature. You can click on "Writing About Literature" (at the top) to get an overview of writing a paper about a piece of literature and then click on the links at the bottom to get very detailed information about each step in the process.

?Writing About Literature, Purdue University Online Writing Lab

There are several helpful handouts at the site of this, the most famous "OWL" (online writing lab).

?Writing About Literature

The OWL at UNC-CH also offers some advice for getting started. A number of definitions of terms like plot are given.

?Writing About Literature

This page is part of Dr. Charles Darling 's large and useful site at Capital Community College. The Guide to Grammar and Writing  is one of the best tutorial sites on the Web, in this teacher's humble opinion. Students in ENG 3321 (Grammars of English) recommend it highly.

?Writing About Fiction

Another Purdue OWL page, this one provides help with prewriting activities and with drafting an essay.

?Using Modern Language Association (MLA) Format

Yet another Purdue OWL page.  Remember that an essay about a work of literature must always have a list of works cited, since you must at least cite the text you are working with.

?Formatting a Paper in MLA Style

This page is designed to show you how to use Word to create an MLA-style page. There are links to information on creating a list of works cited.
