Links to practice materials for the fall 2004 final examination appear below. See also the quotation practice at U. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which includes some works we have read and gives you some excellent advice.) Other materials reached from this page may also be useful, but these are the main ones you should use to prepare for the exam.
This is the index page for some exercises designed to help you learn about materials we are studying and to test your knowledge of them. Providing these is an experiment, and I will appreciate your feedback. More information on setting your computer's security settings to load these exercises appears below. Check your settings if you have trouble getting the exercises to work.
Note: These pages will work more smoothly if you use the special Back buttons on the pages themselves (top or bottom center of the page), not your browser's back button, to return to this page from the exercises.
Pages for use in studying for the final exam, fall 2004:
Flashcards for learning the names of authors and their works (This information will be worth at least 20 points on the exam!)
Matching exercise to test your knowledge of authors and their works (A different set of 20 items will appear each time you load this page.)
Practice recognizing passages and identifying them by author (You get two tries to fill in the blank, and then the question changes to multiple-choice. You can also ask for hints.) (This one quit working when I moved the pages to the new server. I'll try to fix it eventually.)
Pages for use in studying for the final exam, fall 2003:
Pages for use in studying for the quiz on units 4 and 5, fall 2003:
Crossword on authors' names (In American literature, it's important to learn the full name by which an author is usually known.)
Quotations practice
More practice identifying quotations:
Practice for examinations, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (This exercise includes a number of the authors and works we have read, and several students have found it helpful even though it's not a perfect match to our syllabus.)
Page made for this class in an earlier semester
(I hope to keep expanding this.)

You must have Java enabled for these exercises to work. To enable Java in Microsoft Internet Explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options. Click the Security tab, then (with the setting on Internet), click on Custom Level. Scroll down until you see Java Permissions. If the radio button (the round space) for Disable Java is clicked, change it (mine is set on High Safety).
These exercises were made using the Hot Potatoes software from the Research and Development team at the University of Victoria Humanities Computing and Media Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Those of you who plan to teach should check out their site!
