Cult of the
Master ("The
later Henry James was a master of technique. But how good a novelist was he?")
Those of you who have some reservations about James' style in Turn
of the Screw may enjoy looking at this Atlantic Monthly review (by
James Wood) of the Library of America's Henry James: Novels1896-1899.
The volume in question does not include Turn of the Screw, but the
works it does include were written about the same time. Wood's comments
on the causes and consequences of the late style are very interesting--and how
could one resist a review that remarks that "contemporary scholars are
simply not interested in value judgment at all (they have smaller fish to
fry)"?
