William Dean Howells Papers, 1871-1916:  1 box  This list of manuscripts and papers in a library at the University of Rochester gives an idea of how voluminous the correspondence of a late nineteenth century author might be. These would be a tiny fraction of the surviving letters, themselves a small part of the letters Howells wrote.  Scanning the list will give  you a taste of what it is like to do research with primary materials.

WDH:  Edward Bellamy  A Danish site carries Howells' comments about Edward Bellamy, author of the influential utopian novel Looking Backward.
